Ben Franklin Transit's Vanpool system is an excellent transportation alternative for those with long commutes. Riders in BFT's 15-passenger vans share the cost of the van payment, fuel, maintenance, and insurance through a monthly fare. Not only do you save money, but BFT Vanpools provide a comfortable, relaxed ride. Vanpool drivers are fellow commuters, responsible for collecting the monthly fee and fueling the vehicle. In return the driver rides free. One end of your trip must fall within the Ben Franklin Transit service boundary.
The monthly vanpool fare varies. For example, a vanpool route with twelve paying passengers traveling 70 miles per day round trip on a five day work week schedule is $50.50 per month. The same commute on a eight-nines schedule costs $47.82, and the same commute on a four-tens schedule will cost $45.14 per person per month. The monthly costs are shared, so the more riders in the van reduces the cost, and fewer riders in the van increases the cost. Across the board, the average BFT vanpool rider pays $55.00 per month.
