Route 1 Access Improvements

Improvements to Route 1 are being planned based on feedback from the public, bus operators, and supervisors, as the route is currently in use. Four specific areas have risen as points of interest and are now the focus of this study effort. These focus areas include places where sidewalks are missing or difficult to navigate, street crossings that could be enhanced, and intersection or driveway treatments that could improve safety for sidewalk users. The focus area challenges and potential improvements are summarized below.

Route 1 Focus Areas:

  • A. Columbia Center and Fowler Stop (Richland)
  • B. Convention Center (Kennewick)
  • C. Vista Way (Kennewick)
  • D. Lewis Street (Pasco)

Improvements to the Route 1 Focus Areas are meant to improve safety and accessibility. In some cases, safety improvements are recommended due to the history of vehicle and pedestrian accidents that have occurred. In other cases, improvements are planned simply to improve walkability by providing better walkways or crossing improvements. In all cases, the improvements shown or listed herein are still under consideration and will only be implemented when stakeholders agree and funding can be established to make the changes.

The Route 1 Focus Areas are detailed below with information about the user experience or Level of Traffic Stress (LTS) and the safety history. Improvement proposals are also indicated for each area.
