Fare Changes Update
Ben Franklin Transit (BFT) staff have been directed to revisit and reassess the current fare structure to ensure a thoughtful and balanced approach to fare adjustments. This comprehensive reevaluation will consider the outcome of Initiative I-2117, alongside new financial and operational factors, with the goal of aligning the fare structure with BFT’s long-term strategic goals and ensuring financial sustainability.
As part of this process, BFT will collaborate with fare consultants to evaluate the approved fare structure and propose potential updates that better reflect evolving operational and financial realities. The reassessment will focus on key areas, including:
- Ridership Growth: Analyzing how lower fares may encourage increased ridership.
- Financial Impact: Assessing the effect of reduced fare revenue on BFT’s overall budget and service operations.
- Transfer Costs: Identifying and addressing challenges associated with costly multi-transfer trips, ensuring fare adjustments reduce barriers for riders.
“Our goal is to strike the right balance between affordability for our riders and the long-term financial health of the transit system,” said Kevin Sliger, Chief Planning and Development Officer. “By considering various factors and gathering public feedback, we aim to create a fare structure that works for everyone.”
Public Outreach and Feedback BFT is committed to ensuring that any proposed fare changes are well-informed by public input and equitable for all riders. As part of this commitment, BFT staff will continue to evaluate the initially proposed and approved fare structure, make necessary adjustments, and present recommendations to the Board later this year. Any proposed fare changes will undergo a public comment period and a Title VI fare equity analysis to ensure compliance with federal guidelines.
BFT encourages community members to participate in this process and share their feedback during the public outreach period. Updates on meeting dates, locations, and additional details will be shared through BFT’s website and social media channels.
